Peak

Extending the artist/musician Jee Young Sim’s artistic experiments, the performance *Peak* re-purposes a space into a musical instrument, in the course of which the artist seeks a form of freedom. When the sound generated from the space brings about a certain physical transformation to the viewer and listeners, this sound becomes the revelator of true freedom.

In line with the subject of the 4th APAP, that is to re-view and re-read the past APAPs, Jee Young Sim proposes to use a work from the 1st APAP, *Anyang Peak*, for a whole different purpose. Created by MVRDV, *Anyang Peak* is a public sculpture that visually extends the ridge of mountain peak on which the work is situated on. Based on the form and structure of the work, its seriousness and particularity, and the modernistic materials consisting it, this performance intends to break out of the work’s solemnity and envisions it as an instrument that creates new sounds. Students from Anyang Arts High School were invited to play a variation of the song *Wind*—a song by Korean vocalist Kim Jeongmi, which was banned during the 70s—while adopting the rhythms of traditional Samgomu (Korean traditional dance using 3 drums). Reappropriation of the space, melody of a 70s song, and rhythms of a transformed traditional beat, arouse the sense of freedom and communication among the performers and the audience.

*Peak* is a story of unravelment. It transforms the anonymous audience into a community, into an invisible common realm. When the silent peak announces its presence by sound, it becomes a medium of energy and desire for freedom.
