Dissatisfied with the lack of amenities for children in Anyang Art Park, APAP 5 asked Danh Vo to consider developing a playground. As fate would have it, Vo had recently seen the exhibition, “Noguchi’s Playscapes” at Museo Tamayo in Mexico City and was not only thinking about playgrounds, but the genius of Isamu Noguchi in particular, and how he might someday find a chance to present Noguchi’s work somewhere. According to Vo, Noguchi’s designs for public spaces for children, dating from the 1930s, are some of the first examples of art for the public, and demonstrate how Modernist thinking could determine systems for social change—a way to train children through movement and play. In 2017, Vo will unveil a playscape in Anyang Art Park developed in collaboration with architect Choi Seung-ho and The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum, New York.
