For APAP 5, Oscar Murillo weaves his canvases into the infrastructure of a belief system. Produced over the last few years in London, they have traveled to various cities, been stepped on, folded, and covered in debris—they have lived an experience. In July 2016, Murillo brought these canvases to Anyang, and in collaboration with shaman Kim Ju Young, the artist exposed his canvases to the most physical and performative aspects of faith. The paintings and other new works served as both the subject and object of a gut, or Korean shamanistic ritual, receiving the blessing of Kim. The newly anointed canvases were then rolled up and hoisted on the shoulders of the artist to accompany him on several pilgrimages into Samseong Mountain. Installed in a grove of pine trees amidst the incessant chatter of birds and prayer chants from nearby religious facilities, the dark canvases are both ominous and meditative, playing off the charged energy of this sacred site. Murillo’s works will greet the public for a full cycle of the four seasons, during which time the lingering odor of paint will subside and the canvases will accept fragments of the forest, transforming into ecosystems of life and death.
